Herculez Gomez last night became the first American (and second man overall after Scotsman Dominic Kinnear) to win top flight championship in both Mexico and the U.S., having now won both the Primera Divisón and MLS Cup (though Gomez did not play last night in Santos Laguna’s decisive 2-1 win over Monterrey in the Clausura play-off final).
According to ESPN LA, Gomez - who was also yesterday called up to the US national team by Jurgen Klinsmann - becomes the seventh American to win a Mexican title:

The others are Texas-born goalkeeper Eduardo Fernandez de la Garza with Guadalajara (Verano 1997), Nevada’s Gerardo Mascareño with Pachuca (Invierno 1999) and Morelia (Invierno 2000), fellow U.S. call-ups Jose Francisco Torres with Pachuca (Clausura 2007) and Edgar Castillo with Santos (Clausura 2008), and Los Alamitos’ Jonathan Bornstein, who was with Tigres when it won the Apertura last fall.
